The Intruders by Louise Jensen

The Blurb

They were told to leave. They should have listened.

The perfect opportunity…

A manor house available rent-free to house-sitters is an offer too good to miss for Cass and James, who have been saving for a deposit on their own home for so long.

Although it had been abandoned for almost thirty years, after a home invasion left almost all the inhabitants dead, it is an amazing chance for them to build their future.

But is it worth the price?

Shortly after moving in things take a sinister turn. Objects disappear and turn up in odd places, the clock always stops at the same time, the house is strangely oppressive and sometimes it feels like Cass and James are not alone.

Newington House may have bad energy, and a dark reputation. But surely there’s no reason for history to repeat itself, is there?

My thoughts

I received this book from Harper HQStories.

I was absolutely glued to this story from start to finish. It’s a book that delves into how much the past impacts the future. But trust me it’s a true psychological thriller. If you’re faint hearted, make sure you read it in daylight or it’s liable to start your imagination jumping at every single noise.

Louise Jensen has this talent for making you feel like she’s got a corkscrew that’s being slowly wound inside you. When you think you’ve solved everything she’ll then turn everything upside down and you’ll be sat open mouthed and wondering how you never saw any of this coming. I can usually read a couple of books at a time. I was so immersed and there was so much twisting and turning that I had to just sit with it. Which shows just how good it is.

I loved that both main characters had secrets in their past. Also that the book progresses in a dual timeline. The house was a fantastic character in and of itself. Real gothic themes were running throughout this and there were some very dark themes. None of which stopped me reading, I hasten to add. If you read this you’re really in for a treat. I’d definitely highly recommend it.

With thanks to HarperHQ and the author for the advanced reading copy of this book.
